The final four months of the first year of an infant’s life begins the move towards self-independence. The new perceptual skills of the infant include crawling, walking with the support of a caretaker, and understanding orders and responding to it. They usually speak their first words during this period, understanding the meaning of the word “no” (Office of Child Development).
