Do Too Many Employers Want Employees to Have Degrees?

Introduction

Employers are raising the bar when it comes to hiring employees by demanding that employees have degrees. Apparently, employers require employees to have a degree even when the skill set demanded by the job in question is independent of whether the person is a degree holder or not. A high school diploma no longer holds as much value in the workplace, and employers are hiring employees with degrees in positions that were previously held by high school leavers.  Many employers believe that the nature of jobs in today’s market is more complicated, hence the need to have employees who have become well-refined through university education. Moreover, with the high demand for jobs, companies use degrees as a screening mechanism to reduce the number of people who apply for a given job. Employers also believe that employees with degrees are well-equipped as opposed to high school graduates.

The Demand for Degrees in an Evolving Job Market

One reason many employers demand that employees be degree holders is that jobs today are more complicated.  For instance, most jobs are technology-driven, requiring a high level of analytical skills (Rowntree 7). In that regard, employers believe having a degree means that someone has the intelligence and capacity to work under pressure and also deliver. Evidently, some professions like statisticians require skills like interpreting and collecting data, and most of these skills are only obtained by receiving a college education. However, the problem is that some employers ask for a degree even when hiring employees to serve in capacities that do not require one to have a degree. For instance, companies will require potential employees to have degrees even when hiring junior staff like messengers and secretaries, yet these types of jobs can be done through on-the-job training.

Using Degree Requirements as a Screening Tool in Job Recruitment

Another reason that many employers ask for employees to be degree holders is that they use it as a screening mechanism to reduce the number of people who apply for their jobs (Kulkami et al. 539). In today’s market, the demand for jobs is high, and companies use that to their advantage. In that regard, whenever companies advertise vacant job positions, a lot of people apply, and it becomes difficult for the recruiting officers to ascertain the best person for the job. As a result, most companies disqualify most applicants by indicating that they will only employ those with degrees. Consequently, the number of applications for the job decreases, since only those who have degrees will apply.

Perceptions of Degree Holders: Assumptions About Skill and Capability

Many employers also believe that having a degree means one is better equipped. There is a general perception among employers that a degree holder will provide high-quality work, being more productive, more innovative, and better at communication compared to people who do not have a degree (Eisenberger et al. 17). Moreover, employers believe that degree holders possess qualities like persistence and critical thinking. These perceptions are guided by the notion that the given candidate was able to go through four years of intensive training and is therefore well equipped to handle a job. On the other hand, a person who does not have a degree is perceived as less intelligent and hence unable to perform as well in the same capacity.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, the number of degree holders is increasing every day, leading to some of them performing jobs that were formerly done by people without degrees.  One of the reasons that recruiting officers use to justify why having a degree is a condition for getting a job is that they believe current jobs are complex, and hence having a degree is an added advantage. They also believe that a degree holder is better equipped to perform tasks than a person who does not have the same. However, other employers use a degree as a way of reducing the number of applicants.
