Friendship Essay: Are Girls Too Mean in Their Friendship?

Introduction

Friendship is an essential part of individuals’ lives, without which almost no one can get around. It has both positive and negative features, with its consequences. The behavior of girls in friendships deserves special attention, as sometimes this may imply adverse actions. The theme of female friendship is so popular that it is presented in films, depicting such negative aspects of girls as meanness, which may lead to bullying, or even murder.

Depiction of Female Friendship in Films

Female friendship is one of the common topics about communication, often characterized as impossible. Sometimes it is possible to observe that girls may be too mean to each other in their relationships. Such behavior often is shown in contemporary films. For instance, it is possible to consider the movie Bride Wars (2009), which is about two friends who are going to be married on the same day. Due to the fact that none of them agreed to change the date or place of the wedding, the girls not only quarreled, but also began to do dirty tricks against each other, which disrupted planned celebrations (Winick). One more instance of meanness in friendship is the film A Simple Favor (2018), where for the sake of personal benefit both heroines commit acts that harm not only their communication, but also those around them. The case becomes so serious that it leads to the murder of a person (Feig). Watching such films about girls may be one of the reasons for their meanness in real life friendships.

The Influence of Media and Bullying among Girls

One of the manifestations of girls’ meanness may be mockery from their peers. Such behavior is inherent for adolescents, in particular, those who wish to stand out from the crowd and be leaders. Another name for this concept is bullying, which can manifest itself by spreading gossip, banter, exclusion, eye rolling, or the silent treatment (Woods). Such cases occur in the real world, and an example could be a teenage girl who was brought to a terrible condition, and who refused to go to school because her peers intimidated her through the internet, and abused her at school (Khalil). Similar stories have also been shown in various teen films, such as A Girl Like Her (2015). Therefore, parents should pay more attention to raising their daughters in order to avoid worse consequences.

The Skylar Neese Case

There are cases when the behavior and actions of girls towards their friends can become excessively cruel. In 2012, two teenage girls slaughtered their friend, Skylar Neese, who was 16 years old at that time. Despite the fact that their friendship lasted long enough, the reason for which the young girl was killed was a very stupid and insignificant reason, and as one of the murderers said: “We just didn’t like her” (Deutsch and Valiente). Such actions can be caused by a number of reasons, such as upbringing, mental health, environment, hobbies, or relationships with peers. In addition, the fact that girls are more emotional and vulnerable than boys can result in excessive meanness, or even cruelty.

Conclusion

Accumulating all the noted information, it is possible to consider that girls may be too mean, and commit hostile actions towards their peers, both familiar and unfamiliar. Therefore, parents should communicate with their daughters about friendship and appropriate attitudes toward other individuals in order to avoid causes connected with bullying or worse behaviors.
