Do Add-Ons Make People Happier?

Introduction

Basic commodities are essential to the survival of every human being. This is what keeps everyone going; having food, shelter, and, most importantly, clothing. However, a person requires more than that to ensure their good health and security. Having a constant supply of basic commodities will surely make one happier. In the sense that nothing that they really require is absent, they will surely live their lives much better. This means that all the add-ons do not really make life simpler; they complicate it to a greater degree, leaving most people with a craving for more and more products that are higher-end. This leads to an influx of unsatisfied needs, denying them happiness.

The Role of Proper Nutrition in Enhancing Individual Happiness and Self-Esteem

As noted by Elizabeth Somer, eating the right quantities of food and having the right portions of required nutrients is of very great advantage to any person. This greatly determines one’s moods and reciprocation, and one’s moods determines whether one is happy or not. Food in this case is one of the very basic needs of any human being; without food and, in this case, good food, most people will not have the energy required to perform their day-to-day activities. In this case, when they fail to accomplish their daily individual goals simply for the fact that they are not well-fed, it will really hinder their self-progression and deflate their self-esteem. With this, they will not be very happy. Therefore, good food (a basic commodity) is paramount in the realization of one’s individual goals in terms of achieving happiness.

The Impact of Having Adequate Shelter on Personal Happiness and Fulfillment

Having good shelter will really act as a happiness determinant for an individual and his or her family members. It is also a great determinant of happiness in one’s life. After one has accomplished their daily tasks, it is paramount for them to retreat back to a safe place to spend the night. This, to a great degree, makes everyone really happy, as they are not in any way at danger at night. As Viktor Frankl noted in his book, Man’s Search for Meaning (1946), the failure of a person to accomplish any of their ‘dreams’, the failure to satisfy any of their basic needs, such as housing for them or their family members, will make them feel disoriented and short-changed, greatly hindering their pursuit of happiness. Happiness, according to him, is achieved when all one aspires to live up to is achieved and made better for them with regard to being as comfortable as possible.

In a real sense, a fulfilled and happy person happens to be the one who has the essentials of life. This is greatly advanced by having the basic commodities. I really would like to advance the argument that it is not the add-ons in life that make one’s life happier.

Conclusion

Add-ons just help people by making work easier and advancing the human need for prestige. However, looked at from any angle, this does not lead to a happier life. Buying the best champagne in the world, Ace of Spades, won’t make someone happier; it is just a sign of prestige and not a means of advancing their happiness. To conclude, happiness comes from satisfying one’s needs, and mostly the primary ones without which most people would barely survive.
