“Break, Break, Break”<\/strong><\/em> by Alfred Lord Tennyson<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is nothing worse than an inability to tell about the sorrow, that tears the soul to painful pieces. The unspeakable pain is expressed in the poem “Break, Break, Break”<\/em> written by Alfred Lord Tennyson during early 1835 and published in 1842 (Poetryfoundation.org, 2015). The title of the poem allows making assumptions concerning the genre of lyric (a philosophical poem). The theme of the poem is to express the Tennyson\u2019s feelings of melancholy along with his feelings of nostalgia after his friend died. The idea of this poem consists in expressing the insignificance of human life in comparison with the infinite of the entity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

This poem is typically Victorian in its subject (death and sorrow), tone (elegiac), expression (lyrical), theme (despair) and its musical quality (Bachelorandmaster.com, 2015). The lyrical hero is associated with a poet. The poem was written in four stanzas of four lines each. The title Break, Break, Break<\/em> repeated throughout the poem and, on the one side, used to describe the waves, which symbolize a force that \u201cbreaks\u201d up Tennyson\u2019s friends and him. On the other side, the poet\u2019s thoughts seem to break upon his tongue before he can explain how he feels: \u201cI would that my tongue could utter\/\/ The thoughts that arise in me.\u201d This connection between the sea (as a symbol of eternity) and the poet is reinforced by the fact that \u201csea\u201d rhymes with \u201cme\u201d (Shaw, 1976). In addition, the two lines about the sea and the two lines about the poet have the same three-beat rhythm (Anon, 2015).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In stanza two, there are two images that express the continuance of usual life (the fisherman\u2019s boy is playing and the sailor lad the sings), but the grief of the poet remains. In the third stanza, the poet says that the majestic ships fly on their destination under the hill. The indirect reference to the friend, through phrases such as \u201ca vanish\u2019d hand\u201d and \u201ca voice that is still,\u201d lifts the expression to a universal level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the fourth stanza, he is standing near the spot of his friend\u2019s burial on the seashore, but he would never enjoy the tender beauty of the days when his friend was alive (\u201c\u2026 will never come back to me\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are such vivid and emotional images in the poem: visual (\u201cgray stones,\u201d \u201cfisherman\u2019s boy,\u201d \u201csister at play,\u201d \u201csailor,\u201d \u201cboat,\u201d \u201cships,\u201d \u201chaven under the hill,\u201d \u201csea\u201d); auditory (\u201ctongue utter,\u201d \u201cshouts,\u201d \u201csings,\u201d \u201cthe sound the voice\u201d) and tactile (\u201ccold,\u201d \u201cthe touch of a vanish\u2019d hand\u201d). There are also some references to abstract concepts: \u201ca hand\u201d symbolizes friendship, \u201csea\u201d- eternity, \u201cboat\u201d \u2013 people\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The figures of speech and stylistic devices help to create the imagery of the poem: personification as a variety of metaphor (\u201cthoughts arise\u201d); epithets (\u201ccold, grey\u201d) that are more logical attributes characterize the object and imposing on a reader. Oxymoron (the tender grace of a day than dead) expresses the feeling of displeasure, pity, regret; frequent repetition (\u201cbreak\u201d) emphasizes the emotional meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polysyndeton (repeated use of conjunctions (\u201cfor,\u201d \u201cand,\u201d \u201cbut\u201d) has a strong rhythmic impact. Alliteration \u201cb-h-d\u201d expresses deep sorrow, \u201cs-l-sh\u201d- the sounds of the sea, \u201co-ai\u201d- lament. Syntactically the line is a broken sentence. The rhyming scheme is \u201cabcb,\u201d but in the second stanza, the rhyme also adds up to \u201caaba.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Break, Break, Break<\/em> is one of the great short lyrics. It has somber music, vivid pictures, and profound feeling, expressed in a style marked by simplicity, economy, and directness of appeal.
